DNA and the DAR: Using DNA as a Piece of the Evidence for a DAR Application

Before you register for a course in the DAR Genealogical Education program, there are several things you need to do:

  1. Create a user account.  Be sure to include your national number in the designated box so that you will receive credit for the course. To create an account, click here.
  2. Read and familiarize yourself with:

    2. the Course Goals
    3. the Technical Requirements
    4. the Guidelines for Forum Use
    5. the Instructions for Manipulating Documents in Adobe Reader
  3. Run the Software Check to make sure that you won't have any problems accessing the course materials. No refunds will be given if your computer is not compatible with the course software.
  4. You MUST allow pop-ups for the course site. Keep in mind that there may be more than one pop-up blocker installed in your browser. Toolbars such as Google and Yahoo! have their own pop-up blockers, so if you have these toolbars installed, you will need to adjust the settings in each of your toolbars.
    1. AOL users should minimize the AOL browser and use FireFox or Google Chrome. The AOL browser is not compatible with the course software.  Recent versions of Internet Explorer may also have some compatibility issues with the course site.
    2. Older versions of Safari are known to not be compatible with the course software. Users using Safari Version 5.1.2 (6534.52.7) on Mac OS 10.6.8 have successfully completed the courses with no problems.

This course provides an introduction to Genealogical Research skills with an emphasis on locating genealogical documentation; identifying specific pieces of genealogical evidence; and evaluating evidence within the context of the criteria required for DAR applications and supplemental applications.

The $125 registration fee allows you 90 days of access to the course materials, including interactive lessons, handouts and forums.  Keep in mind that you must also achieve passing scores on the quiz for each lesson to be able to progress through the course.

This course will provide you with the information needed to successfully prepare a DAR application or supplemental application including: the skills needed to analyze the lineage documentation that you have collected, identify acceptable types and sources of Revolutionary War service, and prepare the application and the documentation according to current DAR procedures for the submission of applications and supplemental applications.

The DAR Genealogical Education Program: Course 3--Advanced Techniques for Resolving Problems with Lineage and Service on DAR Records will provide you with knowledge of alternative source of information, methods of analyzing indirect evidence, and the strategies necessary to resolve complex lineage and service issues that may hinder the verification of an application or supplemental application.

Welcome to the DAR Genealogical Education Program.  DNA and the DAR: Using DNA as a Piece of the Evidence for a DAR Application, will provide you with the current policy, guidelines and procedures for submitting DNA evidence as part of the documentation for a DAR application. 

This course is specifically focused on the current requirements for using DNA evidence for a DAR application.  If you need more general information about using DNA evidence for genealogical research (not directly related to DAR applications or supplementals), you may wish to refer to some of the other instructional materials that are available for this topic.
